Ear Wax Removal at The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas

Earwax is something we all have, but sometimes, it can become a problem. When it builds up too much, it can affect how well you hear, cause discomfort, or even lead to infections. That’s where The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas, can help. They offer ear wax removal services that are safe, effective, and gentle.

Why Do We Have Earwax?

Before we talk about removal, let’s discuss why we have earwax in the first place. Earwax, or cerumen, is a natural substance that our bodies produce to protect our ears. It’s made by glands in the ear canal and serves several important purposes:

  • Traps dirt and debris: Earwax helps catch dust, dirt, and other particles so they don’t reach your eardrum.
  • Keeps your ears moist: It prevents the skin in your ear canal from becoming too dry.
  • Fights off infections: Earwax has antibacterial properties, so it can help stop infections before they start.

Normally, earwax works its way out of your ear naturally through activities like chewing and talking. But for some people, earwax can build up, leading to a blockage.

Signs You Need Ear Wax Removal

How do you know when it’s time to get your earwax removed? Here are some common signs that indicate a buildup:

Hearing Loss

One of the most noticeable signs of too much earwax is sudden or partial hearing loss. If sounds seem muffled or you find yourself turning up the volume on the TV more than usual, a wax blockage could be the cause.

Earache or Discomfort

Earwax buildup can lead to pressure and discomfort in your ear. You might feel like there’s something stuck inside your ear canal. In severe cases, this can even cause pain.

Tinnitus (Ringing in the Ears)

A wax blockage can also lead to tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. If you start hearing a buzzing or ringing sound that isn’t coming from an outside source, earwax might be the culprit.

Dizziness or Balance Problems

Excess earwax can press on sensitive parts of the ear, leading to dizziness or problems with your balance. This happens because your ear also plays a role in how your body keeps its balance.

Ear Infections

Too much earwax can create a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to ear infections. If you experience pain, swelling, or a feeling of fullness in your ear, it’s time to seek help.

Why You Shouldn’t Remove Earwax at Home

It can be tempting to try to remove earwax on your own, but this can sometimes make things worse. Here are some reasons why DIY earwax removal is not a good idea:

Q-Tips Can Push Wax Deeper

Many people use cotton swabs, like Q-tips, to try to clean out their ears. However, this can actually push the wax deeper into the ear canal, making the blockage worse.

Risk of Injury

Trying to remove earwax yourself can lead to accidental injury. You might scratch the inside of your ear or even damage your eardrum, which can cause pain or hearing loss.

Infections

DIY removal methods, like using ear candles or inserting foreign objects, can introduce bacteria into the ear canal and lead to infections.

For these reasons, it’s always best to leave earwax removal to the professionals.

How The Hearing Haven Can Help

At The Hearing Haven, earwax removal is handled by trained specialists who know how to do it safely and effectively. Let’s take a look at what you can expect when you visit The Hearing Haven for earwax removal.

Initial Consultation

Your appointment will start with an initial consultation. The hearing specialists will ask you about your symptoms and perform a quick ear exam using an otoscope. This allows them to see if earwax buildup is the problem.

Gentle Removal Techniques

The Hearing Haven uses safe and gentle techniques to remove earwax without causing discomfort. Here are a few methods they might use:

  • Irrigation: This involves flushing the ear canal with warm water or a saline solution to gently loosen and remove the wax. It’s one of the most common methods and is very effective.
  • Curettage: In some cases, the specialist may use a small, curved instrument called a curette to carefully scoop out the earwax.
  • Microsuction: This method uses a tiny suction device to vacuum out the wax buildup.

Thorough Cleaning

Once the wax is removed, the specialist will make sure your ear canal is thoroughly clean and free of any debris. This can also prevent further wax buildup in the near future.

There are several benefits to having your earwax removed by professionals at The Hearing Haven:

How to Prevent Earwax Buildup

Once you’ve had your earwax removed, there are steps you can take to help prevent it from building up again. Here are a few tips:

Avoid Q-Tips

As mentioned earlier, using Q-tips to clean your ears can push wax deeper into the ear canal. Instead, wipe the outer part of your ear with a damp cloth after showering.

Use Ear Drops

Over-the-counter ear drops can help soften earwax, making it easier for your ears to naturally push it out. Just make sure to use ear drops sparingly and according to the instructions.

Hearing loss is a daily journey. Many people want to  know why OTC (over the counter) hearing aid solutions are not as easy as they seem. It’s not as simple as putting a device in your ear and hearing like you remember. Hearing and auditory understanding are two completely different beasts. Majority of individuals say I can't hear. What they mean is I am not understanding words clearly. This has to do with your brain and how it is processing sound. There are many factors to consider when purchasing a hearing aid and what your provider is going to do for you to ensure success over years, not just a few months. Truly, your hearing aids are worthless without an experienced professional to submit a prescription and follow up treatment plan. At the hearing haven we are not saying you won’t have problems. In fact we are stating the opposite. You will encounter many problems during your better hearing journey and we ensure when you are experiencing that problem we will be there to resolve it quickly and with integrity.

We specialize in customized hearing solutions for everyone. We are committed to recommending and providing proper hearing protection for recreational and industrial adventures. We strive for an earlier adoption rate. Most people wait until it is too late. Majority insurances can offer coverage for their members before claiming medicare. Sadly, people wait till they are on medicare, expecting payment. That simply isn’t true. Medicare does not offer the proper payment for these circumstances. We are committed to educating and advocating on the patient's behalf and to offer affordable options.
